Introduction to World of Tanks

Posted: September 18, 2010 in World of Tanks

Hello all,

Recently i came across a new MMO game under development by Wargamingnet. They specialize exclusively in military strategy games.

Their newest game is called World of Tanks, and guess what ? It’s about tanks, World War 2 tanks to be precise. At this moment it is in its closed beta status, so i can only give some general info.

Ow no !! not another World War 2 game some of you might think, but (as a amateur specialist in that era of weapon development myself) i can say that they have chosen an interesting era. In those days development of tanks, in terms of power; protection, maneuverability, was one of the main priorities of the world leading countries (if it wasn’t, it was going to be, like in the USA).

And with all those developments and discoveries, along came a wide spread of different tanks, ranging in for example, damage dealing (power), protection (armor), speed and maneuverability (weigth and engine).

In result you can chose of over 150 different tanks in this game (light, medium, heavy, tank destroyers, long-range self-propelled howitzers) that have been build by America, Germany, and USSR, French, British, and Japanese (some to be included after release) in the era from the 1930’s up to the Korean war. Including some experimental tanks like the German E Series tanks (one to be known as the Maus, here displayed alongside a modern US M1 Abrahams, just look at the size :))

The game combines several genres: Mainly ofcourse its a MMO, beside that it contain elements from Simulation, RPG, Action and Strategy genres. Althought they want to keep it historical they also want to keep it fun, so you won’t have to spend your time on getting used to controls. The game’s difficulty lies upon applying your tactical skills and coordinating moves with your teammates.

As for RPG, well as with all games you start at the bottom. You start with the lightest and cheapest tank and by earning your experience points you can further upgrade your vehicle by installing better equipment of higher levels.

As for the action, well you already know, you fight with tanks as you are fighting in a tactical shooter. Different tanks are good for spotting, tracking, and destroying enemy units and to engage in head-to-head duels where your speed and reaction time is as important as in any co-op shooter.

So what do you pay for ? Well, so far i can read from their side, there’s telling of monthly fees to be a premium user, but i have no idea how they are working that out, so stay tuned 🙂

Ingame you can trade different items, like shells, cannons, engines, chassis, and even your tanks (yes you can own more then one :)). With winning battles (losing to, but you get less) you earn credits and gold. Both can be used to trade, but possessing gold will result in some bonuses that will neither affect the gameplay nor give players decisive advantage in battles. (what it does include i don’t know yet)

So far for the gameplay, now what about the goal of the game ? Well here it is plain and simple: there will be a global map divided into hundreds of provinces where battles for territories will unfold.

They use some sort of flash programm to show the screenshots so i cant link them here but right below are the links to the website and the screenshot gallery. I will post some trailers later:
